Holiday Happenings
December 5th, 2008 12:23 PM

December has begun and we are all trying to gear up for the Christmas holidays.  Our local cities all have plans for a variety of activities to help get you in that holiday spirit.  Check some (or all) of them out for some great family fun!

The City of Claremont will hold its annual Holiday Promenade and Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at the Claremont Depot located at 200 West First Street. The evening will be filled with live music, festive storefronts, and more. The Claremont Village will transform into a holiday wonderland, where the young and young at heart can enjoy the festivities. The Holiday Promenade will include live entertainment from the Claremont High School Chamber Singers, the upbeat sounds of Swing 4 Sale, the musical jingles of Hai Muradian and friends, and caroling along the streets.

Children can take a FREE ride on the Holiday Express Train around the historic Claremont Depot; jump on the trolley and head over to the Public Plaza for more great entertainment. Parents are encouraged to bring a camera to take a priceless photo of their little one with Santa Claus at the Packing House located at 532 West First Street, from 5 -6 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. For more information about the Holiday Promenade, call the Hughes Community Center at (909) 399-5490.

The City of Covina will hold its 58th annual Covina Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6 beginning at 6:30 PM.  The parade, which is also a popular high school band competition event, begins at the corner of Badillo Street and Second Avenue and travels west, then turns south to end at Puente Street. High school bands then gather at Covina-Valley USD’s District Field to receive competition awards.

This is a great time to gather with friends and family and enjoy a cool, crisp evening of holiday music and festivities.  The streets begin closing at 4:30 PM so bring some blankets, a picnic dinner, some hot chocolate and/or coffee and goodies for desert.  And don't forget to watch for Santa at the end of the parade!

The City of Glendora will be hosting their Hometown Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 13 beginning at 9:00 AM.  The parade starts downtown in the village at Bennett and Glendora Avenue led by the award winning Glendora High School Tartan Band then goes west on Foothill to Grand.  It proceeds north on Grand to Bennett and ends at La Fetra & Sandburg Schools.

In addition, America's Christian Credit Union at 2100 E. Route 66 in Glendora will be hosting their 3rd Annual Snow Day - 40 Tons of Fun!  This free event will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 PM and will feature REAL SNOW for the kids to play in, a petting zoo, and, of course, the jolly elf himself - Santa Claus.

The City of La Verne will host its 9th Annual Winter Wonderland in La Verne - December 13, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

If you can't make it to the mountains this year than the City of La Verne will bring the snow to you! Bring the kids (ages 1-12) to this annual winter event featuring two 60-foot snow runs and two 30' x 30' snow play lands both with real snow. Children can choose from a variety of crafts in the craft area, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and a doughnut at "Mrs. Claus' cozy Kitchen," and of course visit Santa. Be sure to bring your cameras for this wonderful photo opportunity. Kids should dress for snow: mittens, gloves, boots and jackets. Sliding saucers will be provided. There will also be refreshments for sale. In the event of rain, "Winter Wonderland" will be held at the La Verne Community Center (3680 "D" Street, La Verne).

Cost: $10 per person

Location: Heritage Park (5001 Via De Mansion, La Verne)

Please note: You must pre-register. This event will sell out! Limited to the first 450 people - first come, first served. Don't wait to sign up! All participants must arrive by 11:45 or their "passport to fun" will be issued to those on the waiting list.

There will be plenty of games and attractions for all of the children. The little ones can play in the snow and slide down our snow slide. Hop aboard and take your picture at Truck Stop San Dimas, a special collection of fire trucks, sheriff's cars, tow trucks, and much more! Through out the day there will be local entertainment.

Pick one or all of the above activities to get you into the mood.  The time leading up to Christmas can be very stressful at times.  Make sure to take some time out to enjoy these activities with your family.  Those presents will still be there to wrap tomorrow.  Enjoy!
